In the years 1315–1564, the capital of the Duchy of Oświęcim. From 1564 it was a royal town of the Crown of the Kingdom of Poland. The royal city of the Oświęcim County Office in the Silesian County of the Kraków Voivodeship at the end of the 16th century. Over the centuries, it was the capital of the Oświęcim district with various borders.
According to the Central Statistical Office data from June 30, 2021, the city had 37,231 inhabitants, which placed it fourth among the cities of the Lesser Poland Voivodeship.
